The Waterford Bannow Island: Edition 1.1 is a Single Farm Origin Irish Single Malt Whiskey, distilled in 2016 and bottled in 2020 at 50% ABV. This whiskey is part of the Single Farm Origins series from the innovative Waterford Distillery, which aims to emphasize the impact of terroir on the flavor profile of whiskey.
Crafted exclusively with 100% Irish malted barley, grown by Ed Harpur on the extreme south coast of Wexford County, the Bannow Island edition harnesses the unique and demanding sandy soils, swept by the iodized winds of the Atlantic, to create a distinctive and challenging terroir.
This second edition of Bannow Island presents a more rounded character than its predecessor, due to the pronounced use of sweet natural wine casks, while retaining the malt and fruity style characteristic of this terroir. The whiskey boasts notes of malt, fruit, delicate citrus, Christmas cake, and sweet cereals, accentuated by a subtle touch of leather.
The maturation process involved a combination of first-fill American oak, virgin American oak, and ex-fortified wine casks, ensuring a complex and layered flavor profile. Notably, the German market release originates from the Tinnashrule Farm, marking the first bottling from this farm. The barley fields of Tinnashrule benefit from well-drained loam and clay loam of the famously productive Clonroche series, situated on glacial drift derived from Ordovician shale and granite.
This bottling is one of the very first single farm origin releases produced by the highly anticipated Waterford Distillery, which is pioneering the concept of terroir in Irish whiskey. The distillery firmly believes that the main ingredient of Irish Whiskey, the barley, profoundly shapes the distinctive flavor profile of their whiskey. Each farm that supplies the distillery is celebrated with a unique whiskey that bears its name.
This highly sought-after first release from this exciting and innovative distillery is bottled in pristine condition, with boxes that are well-preserved, though some may have slight creasing or tearing.
The ABV (Alcohol By Volume) of Waterford Bannow Island: Edition 1.1 is 50%.
A total of 8,616 bottles were produced for this edition.
The Bannow Island Edition is unique due to its exclusive use of malted barley grown on the extreme south coast of Wexford County, combined with a distinctive maturation process involving first-fill American oak, virgin American oak, and ex-fortified wine casks.
The Single Farm Origin concept by Waterford Distillery emphasizes the influence of terroir on the flavor profile of whiskey, with each farm that supplies barley being celebrated with a unique whiskey named after it.
As a reviewer, I find the Waterford Bannow Island: Edition 1.1 to be a standout expression in the world of Irish whiskey. The meticulous attention to terroir and the innovative maturation process result in a whiskey that is both complex and delightful. The warm vanilla cream and marzipan on the nose, combined with the spicy warmth and toffee-popcorn on the palate, create an engaging and memorable experience. This edition is a testament to Waterford Distillery's commitment to quality and their pioneering approach to single farm origin whiskey.
