Established in 1897 by the Tomatin Spey Distillery Company, the Tomatin distillery has experienced various periods of fluctuation in production. During the 1960s and 1970s, the distillery expanded from 2 stills to 23 stills. In 1985, it became the first Scottish distillery to be under Japanese management when it was purchased by Takara Shuzo Co. and Okara & Co. Today, the distillery operates with 10 stills and produces approximately 2 million liters annually, although it has a capacity of around 5 million liters per annum.

It begins its maturation in traditional oak casks and undergoes a final aging period of up to 9 months in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks.
