This unique expression is a collaboration with the global environmental organization PARLEY, aiming to embody the strength and essence of nature. Matured for an impressive 45 years in heavily charred American oak ex-bourbon barrels, this whisky undergoes an extraordinary process. The barrels are exposed to freezing temperatures and arctic winds in the Canadian glacier regions for 96 hours, causing them to crack and break. This allows the whisky to penetrate deeper into the wood, developing spicier and sweeter notes.
This limited edition release is available in only 2,455 bottles worldwide, showcasing a complex flavor profile that is rich, dry, and mild with a peppery kick. It reveals clear maritime tones of seaweed and iodine, intertwined with glacial mineral notes reminiscent of crushed limestone and salt crystals. Complex sweet aromas of dried fruit and creamy vanilla provide depth and warmth, accented by a subtle smoky undertone and hints of sandalwood. Adding a drop of water introduces an additional note of almond toffee.
The texture is smooth and mouth-filling, delivering a toffee-sweet taste that becomes increasingly salty and peppery. Despite its long aging, the flavor remains remarkably intense, featuring a surprising hint of chili pepper. A splash of water harmonizes the flavors, with the toffee taste accompanied by a delightful saltiness reminiscent of salted caramel, while the peppiness becomes less pronounced.
This whisky is the culmination of over 40 years of aging, followed by a finish in casks that have been fractured by freezing temperatures. As the third and final release in the Talisker Xpedition Oak series, a collection of rare and long-matured single malt whiskies, the resulting flavor profile is complex and long-lasting. It boasts a build-up of chili pepper heat and a hint of wax in the aftertaste, along with a persistent salt and pepper presence. Adding water enhances the saltiness, with less pepper and a light smoky aroma.
