Port Ellen is a historic distillery, established in 1825 and located on the southern shores of Islay. It was originally a maltings, then developed into a distillery in 1833 under the leadership of John Ramsay. The distillery was later acquired by the Distillers Company Limited in 1925, closed in 1930, and rebuilt in 1966/1967. Production continued through the 1970s before the distillery was closed in 1983. Despite its closure, single malt whisky from Port Ellen is still available. The 7th release of Port Ellen, distilled in 1979 and bottled in 2007 after 28 years of aging, is part of the distillery’s annual series. It is believed to have aged in a combination of Refill Sherry Casks and Refill American Bourbon Casks and is bottled at natural cask strength of 53.8%. Only 5274 bottles were released, making it a rare and exclusive whisky. The peaty character of Port Ellen is reflected in its taste, which is notably smoky, reminiscent of the harbor, diesel, and other rugged flavors. The whisky is rich in spices, and each sip reveals new flavors, including vanilla, smoky tea, a beautiful balance of sweet, sour, and bitter notes, and an overall taste that is characteristic of Port Ellen. The aroma of Port Ellen can be described as a mix of brine and seaweed, with a pleasant hospital smell and distinct peat aromas. Fresh fruit notes and a hint of menthol are also present, along with the scent of a farmyard when the sheep are sheared. This annual release from Diageo is another 1979 Port Ellen. Previous releases have sold out quickly, so interested buyers should act fast. The future of these releases is uncertain, so this may be a unique opportunity to acquire a bottle.
