Port Ellen is a whisky distillery with a rich history, founded in 1825 and closed in 1983. The distillery was originally a maltings, before being developed into a distillery in 1833 by John Ramsay. The warehouses built by Ramsay still stand and are listed. The distillery was taken over by the Distillers Company Limited in 1925, closed in 1930, and rebuilt in 1966/1967. Production continued through the 1970s and ceased in 1983, although single malt whisky from Port Ellen is still available. The Port Ellen 1978 6th Release Diageo Special Releases is a 27-year-old whisky, distilled in 1978 and bottled in 2006. It is the 6th edition in the Annual Release series, with only 4560 bottles released, making it a very exclusive offering. The whisky is characterized by its turf, meaty, and waxy aromas, with notes of smoked fish, pepper, stewed fruits, treacle, and toffee. It is believed to have been matured in a combination of Refill Sherry Casks and Refill American Bourbon Casks.
