The Old Rhosdhu 1993 TR Hogshead by The Roots is a unique and intriguing whisky, bottled in 2022 after an impressive 29 years of maturation. Distilled in the renowned Loch Lomond distillery within the Highlands region, this whisky stands out with its distinct and old-style character. It showcases a fascinating mix of sweet and fruity notes, herbal undertones, and a light grassy astringency, much like the now scarcely available Littlemill. On the nose, it reveals gentle waxy and floral notes, soft farmy touches, rhubarb, pear skin, stewed apples, and a light chalky influence. Apricots, burlap, and straw also make their presence known. With the addition of water, sweet vanilla, nougat, barley husks, and candied fruits emerge. Initial impressions are dominated by hay, leaves, wildflowers, marzipan, metallic hints, and a warm, slightly funky fruitiness in the background. On the palate, you can expect an appealing oily mouthfeel accompanied by a medley of fruits, herbs, and spices. Notes of mustard seeds, tinned tropical fruits, ginger, damp oak, and a grassy bitterness unfold, followed by a subtle vegetal quality. Adding water enhances the fruitiness, revealing peaches, nectarines, and a Littlemill-esque cardboard influence. The finish is long, a tad dry perhaps, but also imbued with sweet fruits and herbaceous elements. This rare gem offers an exciting and unconventional tasting experience, perfect for those who dare to explore its complex layers of flavor and aroma.
