The Laphroaig Cairdeas 200th Anniversary Edition is a special bottling released in 2015 to commemorate the distillery's bicentennial. Cairdeas, meaning "friendship" in Gaelic, is an annual release exclusively for members of the Friends of Laphroaig. This limited edition was released during the Feis Ile 2015 and was available at the distillery's open day. For this special edition, Laphroaig's Cairdeas Master Distiller, John Campbell, employed 100% floor-malted barley from the distillery's own small malting floor and distilled it using the two smaller, older stills. The whisky was then fully matured in Warehouse No.1, located right by the sea on Islay, providing it with a unique maritime influence. This 200th-anniversary edition was produced with the intent of mirroring the flavor of the original 19th-century Laphroaigs as closely as possible. The whisky was matured in ex-bourbon casks for 12 years, resulting in a rich and smoky single malt with a peat level of 51.5%. Laphroaig is an iconic southern Islay distillery, known for producing heavily-peated smoky single malt whisky. It is one of the last distilleries using its own floor maltings and has been Islay's most successful single malt for many decades. The distillery has a substantial production capacity of over 3 million liters per year with 7 stills. Established in 1815 by brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston, Laphroaig remained under D. Johnston & Co until the 1960s. The distillery gained popularity in the 20th century under Donald's great-grandson, Ian Hunter, and his successor, Bessie Williamson, who became one of the first female distillery managers in Scotland. Laphroaig was granted a Royal Warrant in 1994 from HRH The Prince of Wales and has since founded the Friends of Laphroaig, which currently has around 640,000 members.
