The Kanosuke Single Malt Japanese Whisky is a smooth and exotic spirit with a unique flavor profile that includes notes of caramel, banana, tea with lemon, honey quince candy, cinnamon, ginger, and a hint of smoked nuts. The finish is characterized by a subtle bitterness and sweetness that slowly fades. This whisky is distilled by the Kanosuke Distillery, which is named in honor of the founder's grandfather, Kanosuke Komasa, who released Japan's first cask-aged Shochu "Mellowed Kozuru" in 1957. The distillery is located in Kagoshima Prefecture, overlooking Japan's longest sand beach, and the whisky is matured in a combination of ex-shochu, ex-sherry, and American white oak casks, as well as re-charred American white oak and ex-"Mellowed Kozuru" aged Shochu casks. The climate in the area, with calm summers and fierce winter winds, contributes to the unique flavor profile of the whisky. The distillery uses a mix of peated and unpeated malt, and the yeast used in the fermentation process is the distillery's own. This Japanese Single Malt is a non-age statement release and is one of the first releases from the recently opened Kanosuke Distillery. On the nose, it is already really nice, round, and harmonious, with American white oak being very well suited to give a young whisky a soft sweetness. Expect lots of toffee, caramel, a few undefinable fruits, light sweet wine, late harvest Riesling, and soft vanilla wood. The taste is still a bit stormy on the palate, with a touch of bitterness, then a mixture of young, simple cognac, toffee, and some petrol. The finish is creamy, slightly spicy from sugared ginger, and has an almost medium-length but unspectacular conclusion. Overall, it's quite solid for a whisky that is probably still very young, but it hasn't yet reached the level of a real treat.

The Kanosuke Single Malt Japanese Whisky is a commendable effort from the relatively new Kanosuke Distillery. The nose is the standout, offering a harmonious and well-rounded experience. While the palate still feels a bit young and stormy, it shows promise with interesting notes of cognac and toffee. The finish is pleasant, though not particularly memorable. This whisky is a solid start and hints at great potential for future releases.
