The Hillside 1970 Rare Malts Selection is a 25-year-old single malt whisky distilled at the Glenesk distillery, also known as Hillside. Situated in the northeast Highlands, this distillery has a rich and varied history, marked by numerous name and function changes since its establishment in 1897. Originally built as a versatile facility for producing either malt or grain whisky, or even just as a maltings for other distilleries, Glenesk has also been known under the names Highland Esk, North Esk, and Montrose at different times. The distillery was renamed Hillside in 1964, reverted to Glenesk around 1980, and then finally closed its doors in 1985.
Bottled by Diageo for their prestigious Rare Malts Selection, this exceptional whisky was distilled in 1970 and matured for 25 years. It forms part of Diageo's historic collection of single malt whiskies, which includes offerings from both operational and defunct distilleries, released between 1995 and 2005. Each bottle in this notable series is individually numbered and comes beautifully presented in a box.
Launched by United Distillers, this series originally featured bottlings from numerous closed distilleries starting in 1995. The single malts in the collection were distilled between the late 1960s and early 1980s, with maturation periods ranging from at least 18 years to as long as 30 years. The series was so well-received that it led to the establishment of an annual release event known as the "Special Releases" starting in 2001. Notable distilleries included in this series are Benrinnes, Brora, Linkwood, and Teaninich.
