The Glen Moray Cider Cask Project Curiosity Collection is a unique and special small-batch whisky from the Glen Moray Distillery, located in Elgin, the Capital of Speyside on the banks of the River Lossie. This whisky underwent a distinctive flavor journey, where finishing casks that previously held whisky were then used to age Scottish craft cider, and finally, the precious Glen Moray was matured in these casks. This intricate process results in a truly exceptional spirit with pronounced apple notes.
Bottled in 2018, this release marks the second edition in Glen Moray's experimental Elgin Curiosity series and was exclusively available in the UK market. With the Scotch Whisky Association updating its rules in 2019 to prohibit the use of cider casks for aging Scotch whisky, only 2,000 bottles of this intriguing and collectible bottle exist, making it a rare find.
This Speyside single malt boasts soft aromas of marzipan, apricot jam, pineapple, and burnt sugar. On the palate, it unfolds with notes of treacle toffee, kirsch cherries, and spicy gingerbread. It's not only a collector's item but also a delightful whisky to savor, characterized by its sweet and spicy flavor profile.
Only 2,000 bottles were produced, making it a limited and collectible release.
This whisky has an ABV of 46.3%.
The whisky was matured in casks that previously held Scottish craft cider, creating a distinctive flavor profile.
Having sampled the Glen Moray Cider Cask Project Curiosity Collection, I found it to be an intriguing and enjoyable whisky. The nose is inviting with dominant apple and pear notes, accompanied by a subtle fermented undertone. On the palate, the whisky reveals a strong cider influence, blending sweet pear with a dry, slightly bitter apple finish. While I appreciate the innovation and the 46.3% ABV that enhances its profile, I wish there was a little more balance between the sweet and bitter notes. Overall, it's a commendable effort in experimentation and a worthy addition to any collection.
