The Dalmore 14yo The Principal Collection is a unique and harmoniously balanced single malt whisky that is exclusively available in the USA. This luscious offering is first matured in American white oak ex-Bourbon barrels, where it develops hallmark notes of soft vanilla, toffee, and honey. A portion of the whisky is then transferred to rare casks from Gonzalez Byass, which have previously held sweet Pedro Ximenez (PX) sherry. These casks add intense layers of figs, dates, and rich maple to The Dalmore's signature chocolate orange character.
The final whisky is a result of the reuniting of these separate parcels after approximately two years, resulting in a unique and harmoniously balanced single malt. The aroma of this whisky is warm and inviting, with notes of honey dates, Seville orange zest, rich raisins, and allspice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and rich, with flavors of figs, dates, toasted hazelnuts, roasted coffee, and maple syrup. The finish is long and luxurious, with rich dark fruits, licorice, marmalade, and depths of cocoa.
This is the first single malt in The Dalmore Principal Collection to be finessed in Pedro Ximenez (PX) Sherry casks. The sun-drenched sweetness of the PX sherry adds intense layers of figs, dates, and rich maple to The Dalmore's signature chocolate orange character. The decadent result will charm the most jaded and inexperienced palates alike.
While some may feel the price is slightly high, this whisky delivers an elegant, balanced, and easily sippable experience. It may not be the most complex dram, but it certainly provides enjoyment with its subtle sweetness and warm character.

In fairness, I would have liked to give this an 86.5, but WB only allows whole numbers. It's better than an 86, doesn't quite hit 87 for me. It's good and fine, but not fantastic. For the money, it might be $10/$15 too much, but considering it's Dalmore and the current market, I'm not upset with the purchase. It reminds me of Glenmorangie Malaga with the sweetness dialed down and less addictive. It has a pretty decent mouthfeel. For a PX finish, the flavors are light, featuring citrus, cinnamon, nuts, and fruit—more strawberry-like but without any tartness. There's a certain elegance to it. It's enjoyable enough but maybe not for someone looking for a complex or challenging dram. It's pretty balanced and an easy sipper, though I think I'd be complaining if the ABV was any lower. The finish is short to medium, a bit drying, with slight bitterness that isn't unpleasant. Overall, it's good and fine, with nothing to complain about.
