Daftmill 2011 Summer Release is a limited edition single malt Scotch whisky from the Daftmill Distillery, nestled in the heart of Fife, Scotland. This much-anticipated release is crafted by the Cuthbert family in their family-owned and operated seasonal distillery, with production uniquely occurring only during the quieter farming periods of midsummer and winter. Known for its small-scale production, Daftmill often produces as few as 100 casks per year, making each release a coveted treasure for whisky aficionados. Distilled in August 2011, the 2011 Summer Release matured in 27 first-fill bourbon barrels sourced from the Clermont Springs distillery in Kentucky. The whisky is crafted from the Publican variety of barley, grown on the estate's 43-acre field, harvested in August 2009, and malted in Alloa during the summer of 2010. Bottled at a natural color and unchillfiltered at 46% ABV, this release is one of 6550 bottles made available in September 2023. This 12-year-old whisky embodies a delightful balance of sweet spices and fruity notes, characteristic of a refined Lowland style. Aromas of brown sugar, banana, and soft candy fillings lead to flavors of sweet orchard fruit, apple pie with cinnamon, ginger akin to ginger beer, and mild honey. The whisky offers a sensory feast, held together by an undercurrent of earthy and farmyard elements.

I quite enjoyed this one, although I’ll be honest: it’s not my favorite Daftmill to date. This being my fourth encounter with Daftmill, I found it somewhat more subtle and less bold than previous releases, particularly missing the distinctive farmyard notes that have impressed me in the past. The nose offers lactic, fruity, and farm-like notes with a grassy undertone, while the palate delivers a lactic creamy arrival with hints of coffee, treacle, and a chalk-like earthiness. The finish is long, becoming increasingly woody and dry. Overall, it's a well-made whisky, although it left me yearning for the more outspoken qualities of earlier releases.
