The Bruichladdich Celtic Nations Celtic Blended Malt Whisky is a unique and limited edition bottling, first released in 2006, that celebrates the distilling influence of Scotland's West Coast. This whisky is the result of a one-off experiment by Bruichladdich distillery, in partnership with Ireland's Cooley distillery, to blend single malts from both distilleries. The Scotch Whisky Association later banned the practice of mixing malts from different nationalities, making this bottling a unique and probably unrepeatable product.
This blended malt whisky is composed of a single malt from Bruichladdich and an Irish single malt, bottled at 46% ABV and 700ml. The bottle number 552 out of 7200 is in perfect condition.
The art of distilling was introduced to Scotland's West Coast at the end of the ninth century by zealous Christian missionaries and marauding Viking invaders. A millennium later, the Celtic "diaspora" (the "scattering of seeds") ensured that emigrating Scots, dispersed throughout the world, would take with them that knowledge and enthusiasm for distillation. The Celtic Nations whisky is a tribute to this rich heritage and the influence of the Celtic culture in the whisky world.
There was some debate about this dram, but it is a cheeky little number and I enjoyed it enough to drink a good few bottles of this. For a vatting of grain and malt, it was very nicely balanced and a nice warmer on a cold evening. It was also pointed out to me in the distillery that there is a spelling mistake on the bottles.
A nice opener in the evening. Not very complex, but delicious vanilla notes with wood and a hint of salty peat. Solid but no high flyer.
Attractive dram, nice combination of sweetness and some hints of smoke. Nice 'drop' taste as well, very pleasant.
The bottle code on my bottle is 06/238 20 nov 06 12:13.
The ABV is 46%.
There were 7200 bottles produced.
The size is 700 ml.
This whisky is unique because it is a blend of single malts from both Bruichladdich distillery in Scotland and Cooley distillery in Ireland. The practice of blending malts from different nationalities was later banned by the Scotch Whisky Association, making this bottling unrepeatable.
Overall: This whisky offers a balanced combination of sweetness and smoke, with delicious vanilla notes and a touch of salty peat. Although not very complex, it is a solid and very pleasant dram that serves as a nice warmer on a cold evening.
The Bruichladdich Celtic Nations Celtic Blended Malt Whisky stands out as a memorable and distinctive dram, bridging the gap between Scottish and Irish distilling traditions. While not overly complex, it is balanced and pleasing, with a harmonious blend of sweet and smoky notes. Its unique heritage and the historical context make it a fascinating addition to any whisky collection.
