The Brora 12th Release is a special single malt whisky from the now-silent Brora distillery, bottled in 2013 after 35 years of aging. The distillery, originally known as Clynelish, was built in 1819 and was renamed Brora in 1969 to avoid confusion with the newly built Clynelish distillery. Brora whisky produced between May 1969 and July 1973 was heavily peated to supply blended whisky, due to a shortage of heavily peated Islay whisky caused by drought and the closure of the Caol Ila distillery. Most of the whisky produced at Brora after 1973 has a lighter peat character than the whisky produced during the earlier years.
The Brora 12th Release is a limited edition of 2,944 bottles, distilled in 1977 and aged for 35 years in a combination of refill American oak and European oak casks.
