The Bowmore 30 Year Old is an exquisite and rare single malt whisky, distilled in 1989 and matured for three decades in a combination of sherry hogsheads and bourbon barrels. Bottled in 2020 at a cask strength of 45.1%, this whisky exemplifies Bowmore's celebrated rich fruity and subtly smoky style.
Aromas of heather honey, vanilla, butterscotch, raisins, and peaches fill the nose, complemented by notes of ripe apricot, charred pineapple, mango, and butterscotch. The palate is intensely flavorful, boasting tropical fruits, a subtle sweetness, and warm peat smoke. This limited release is part of a new annual series, with only 2976 bottles available in 2021. The presentation is equally impressive, as the wooden box it comes in is inspired by the terrain surrounding the Bowmore Distillery, featuring detailed markings of driftwood and the refined polish of sea glass, reflecting its eternal connection with Islay.
The Bowmore Distillery, established in 1779 and located on the shore of Loch Indaal, is the oldest producing distillery on the island of Islay. It operates under Morrison Bowmore Distillers, which is part of Beam Suntory. The distillery remains true to its traditional nature by sourcing as much local barley from the island as possible and using its own floor maltings.

Having tasted the Bowmore 30 Year Old at Hangzhou Maltang, I found it to have a robust sherry influence with a mature herbaceous peat aroma. The presence of dark preserved fruits added complexity, while the oily texture and noticeable tannins from the bourbon barrels provided a solid mouthfeel. Despite a slightly astringent aftertaste, this whisky offers an exquisite balance of flavors that makes it a worthy addition to any collection.
