The BenRiach Malting Season 1st Edition Bourbon Virgin Oak is a 2012 single malt that marks the inaugural release in the Speyside distillery's Malting Season series. This expression is a celebration of BenRiach's time-honored tradition of malting barley by hand on its iconic malting floors, a practice that has been utilized since the distillery was founded in 1898. The barley is steeped in water and spread across the malting room, where it is turned by hand over several days to aid in its germination. This highly skilled process harks back to the 19th century. The first edition of the 'Malting Season' small batch release is comprised of 23 barrels, with spirit distilled on November 2, 2012, from concerto barley, yielding a total of 6,672 bottles at a strength of 48.7% ABV. It is double matured in ex-bourbon and American virgin oak casks. The palate offers notes of vanilla barley sugars, warm poached apples, almond fudge, and honeyed pear, with a long and luxurious finish that carries a lasting nuttiness from the slowly kilned malt. This is the first bottling of an expression made in this hands-on process by BenRiach for over one hundred years. The distillery is one of just two remaining distilleries in Speyside to distill whisky using malted barley from its own floor maltings. The maturation in virgin oak casks imparts a cask-imparted barley gold color. Each annual release in this series will feature a different variety of barley and bottling strength, making each edition unique. This release is from 100% in-house floor malted barley, a rarity in the industry as most distilleries have moved towards using commercial maltings. The malting season is a special time at the distillery, where they create their own malted barley on-site. The results are a rounded and creamy single malt of exceptional richness. This first edition was hand malted in the autumn of 2012, matured in bourbon and virgin oak casks, and bottled in 2021.
