The Ardmore 1997 WN Hogshead is a distinguished single malt Scotch whisky, meticulously crafted at the Ardmore distillery in the Highlands region. This exceptional expression was distilled in 1997 and matured for 24 years before being bottled in 2022 by WhiskyNerds. With a limited release of only 258 bottles, each bottle holds a generous 700ml of liquid gold, boasting an ABV of 49.6%. This whisky is a modern Highland version, reminiscent of a 12-year-old Laphroaig imported by Bonfanti and bottled in the 1970s. Known for its thick texture and warming smokiness, it conjures images of bonfires and coal. On the palate, the Ardmore 1997 WN Hogshead offers a complex mix of flavors, including olive oil, soot, burnt herbs, pine needles, sweet citrus, lime, and subtle aspirin. Additional notes of lemony sootiness, bandages, medicinal herbs, chalk, green fruits, old leather, menthol, and hints of old grease or turpentine give it a mature charm. The finish is long and velvety, highlighted by elegant tropical fruits such as papaya, mango, pineapple, and lemons, along with touches of resin, gentle smoke, damp oak, and moderate, earthy spices. This whisky is highly complex and sophisticated, with a brighter and fruitier character than other late 1990s Ardmore whiskies.
This whisky stands out due to its age and the limited release of only 258 bottles. It has a complex flavor profile with a brighter and fruitier character than other late 1990s Ardmore whiskies, reminiscent of older Laphroaig whiskies.
While it shares some characteristics with older Laphroaig whiskies, it lacks the maritime notes typically found in modern Laphroaig expressions. However, it offers a similar complexity and quaffability.
For the best experience, enjoy this whisky at around 43% ABV. Adding a bit of water can further open up the nose and smooth the taste and finish.
I had the pleasure of sampling the Ardmore 1997 WN Hogshead at the Limburg Whisky Fair, and it left a lasting impression. The nose is impressively balanced, evoking memories of older Laphroaig expressions with its complex malt and peat interplay. The palate is layered and chewable, offering a delightful mix of ripe fruits and herbal notes. The long finish is warming and coating, with a pleasant chocolatey end. This whisky is extremely quaffable and truly an excellent representation of Ardmore's craftsmanship.
