The Ardbeg Auriverdes Limited Edition was released on May 31, 2014, also known as Ardbeg Day during the Islay Festival. Named for the gold and green colors of Ardbeg's bottlings and the Brazilian flag, this whisky is a nod to both the distillery's open day and the 2014 World Cup, with "Auriverdes" being the nickname of the Brazilian national football team. Ardbeg, an iconic Islay distillery founded in 1815, has a rich history of producing outstandingly smoky drams. The distillery was purchased by Diageo forerunners DCL and Hiram Walker in 1973, with Walker taking full control in 1977, the year the distillery's maltings were closed. Ardbeg was mothballed for most of the 1980s, with production beginning again in 1989 under new owners Allied Lyons, but only for two months a year until 1996 when the distillery closed again. In 1997, the dilapidated Ardbeg distillery was bought by Glenmorangie plc (now part of LVMH), leading to a turnaround in the distillery's fortunes. The Auriverdes release is a special edition Ardbeg single malt matured in American Oak Casks and bottled at 49.9%. Known for its smoky drams, this particular release is said to be a dram of two halves, with the whisky using toasted cask lids to create mocha coffee flavors that team up with creamy vanilla. Presented in a 700ml bottle, the Auriverdes is a unique addition to the Ardbeg line, showcasing the distillery's commitment to quality and innovation. This whisky demands a long time of oxidation (about an hour in the open glass) to show its full beauty. It features an enticing aroma of tar, herbs, vanilla, and dark fruits. The taste palette includes coffee, smoked meats, a variety of fruits, and a hint of spice. It finishes long with lingering smoky vanilla, chocolate, and a touch of bitterness.
A total of 66,600 bottles of Ardbeg Auriverdes Limited Edition were produced.
This whisky is unique due to its maturation in American Oak Casks with toasted lids, which impart mocha coffee flavors and creamy vanilla, a tribute to both Ardbeg Day and the 2014 World Cup.
For the best experience, let the whisky oxidize in an open glass for at least one hour to fully develop its complex and well-balanced profile.
Overall: The Ardbeg Auriverdes Limited Edition is a complex and well-balanced whisky with a rich, smoky profile complemented by sweet, fruity, and spicy notes. Its maturation in American Oak Casks with toasted lids brings out unique mocha coffee and creamy vanilla flavors, making it a standout addition to any whisky collection.
