The Transcontinental Rum Line 2004 Guyana Line #21 is a limited release, cask strength rum, with only 468 bottles available, bottled at 60.1% ABV. This exceptional rum is a 14-year-old Enmore rum, distilled in 2004, showcasing the unique characteristics of Guyana's rich rum-making tradition. The initial nose is slightly powdery, with unrefined bottles requiring a short period of aeration before expressing themselves fully. After a few minutes, the rum develops intense notes of black olive and smoky charcuterie, complemented by a powdery note of gunflint that becomes increasingly oily, much like the olive that has now transformed into a tapenade. The fermentation notes provide access to a rich depth, followed by oxidized black fruit tannins, leading to well-toasted wood and a touch of copper. Exotic fruits then take center stage in this already complex nose.
Upon tasting, the rum is bold and rather dry, with a powdery character still present. Wet wood evolves into milk chocolate, initiating a rounder phase. Prune brandy and exotic fruits emerge, displaying signs of age. A light, pastry-like note of almond and resin then appears before the finish. Aeration reveals even more pronounced powdery aromas, an industrial quality, and a hint of menthol. The molasses' licorice note becomes apparent through the powder, with a shadow of the ship's hold, prunes glistening in the dim light, followed by a glimpse of pear brandy.
The finish is long and spicy, with notes of cardamom, caraway, and a blend of toasted spices, such as coriander seeds or Sichuan peppercorns. This rum offers a glimpse into what British Navy rums were like, of which they were an essential component. These two casks rested for a few days in French Guiana before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to age for nearly 14 years in a European climate, and finally being bottled at its natural strength (60.1%). The result of a pot still distillation, this bottling combines two extraordinary casks: #67 & #68.
