Distilled in the legendary Caroni distillery, which was state-owned by Trinidad and Tobago before its closure in 2002, this Samaroli 1997 Caroni Trinidad Single Cask No.899 rum is a rare gem. In 2022, only 101 bottles were drawn from cask number 899, having completed its aging process in Scotland. This rum is an exclusive bottling by the renowned Italian house, Samaroli, for Caksus (Cavavin Belval in Luxembourg). On the nose, the typical Caroni markers are immediately recognizable: tar, tire, hydrocarbons, and ripe fruits, followed swiftly by a gourmand note. There's a slight oiliness with hints of black olive and spices, and despite its 60% ABV, the alcohol is well integrated. On the palate, the oiliness gives way to a refreshing profile with notes of menthol, licorice, leather, tobacco leaf, and pepper, all balanced by a subtle sweetness. The finish is long, with persistent notes of wood and gingerbread. This Caroni rum offers a complex and multifaceted flavor profile characterized by a combination of sweet, spicy, and smoky elements. Quite solid for a continental Caroni, it benefits from a high alcohol strength but lacks a bit of balance compared to its tropical counterparts.
