The Plantation 2008 Trinidad 11yo 42% 700ml is a molasses-based rum produced in Trinidad at the Trinidad Distillers Limited (TDL) and selected and bottled by Maison Ferrand in 2008. With an ABV of 42%, this exquisite rum is a testament to both tropical and continental maturation processes. Initially aged in ex-bourbon casks in Trinidad for 10 years, it was further refined in Ferrand Cognac casks in France for an additional year, making it a well-rounded and sophisticated spirit.
This rum offers a delicate yet complex profile, featuring notes of subtle fruits resting on a bed of natural popcorn. The wood is present, toasted, and raw, with a slightly green and dry character. A hint of caramelization adds depth, leaving the rum in a balanced state without overpowering any particular note.
Upon tasting, the Plantation Trinidad Grand Terroir reveals a slightly rustic character that was not evident in the aroma. It carries a slightly oily, tarry essence with an exotic fruitiness. A veil of vanilla soon competes with this very English character, followed by sweet spices like tonka bean that envelop the palate. Aeration further develops these sweet, spicy notes, reminiscent of exotic wood essence, delivering tones of toasted coconut and a slightly grilled character. The rum eventually leans towards a gourmet, pastry-like character.
On the palate, this rum is zesty and fruity, with vibrant notes of orange, lemon tart, melted white chocolate, mango, and cocoa, before developing into nutmeg and oak spice in the finish. Distilled in 2008 in Trinidad using a four-column still, this rum is aged for 11 years in bourbon barrels, followed by 2 years in Ferrand barrels in France.
Overall, the Plantation Trinidad Grand Terroir is a mild and spicy rum with a natural sweetness that is not overly sticky. It has a pleasant fruity undertone, making it an enjoyable experience for those who appreciate a warm, flavorful rum.

"The intensity leaves much to be desired, with vanilla and subtle nut aromas predominating. On the palate, it starts mildly spicy with notes of wood, but bitter and peppery notes soon take over. The finish has faint nut aromas and lingering bitterness mixed with light fruit notes. Overall, a rather unexciting rum that stands out mainly for its spiciness."
"I get cinnamon, ripe tropical fruits, coconut, cherry pit, and dominant vanilla in the mouth. It reminds me a lot of Chairman's Reserve Classic or even a Jamaican rum."
"Had it after a better dinner at Såstaholms Castle outside Stockholm. It's a little better than OK, but I will not buy it because I'm not a Plantation fan."
"A very nice natural sweetness - not sticky caramel, but nice honey and surprisingly fruity. Not complex, but still enjoyable."
"A little too sweet and also flat. I am used to much better from Plantation."
"A fruity, sweet entry-level rum with vanilla, chocolate, and honey notes. Simple but good."
"As usual, you can recognize Plantation's signature, but it's surprisingly high quality given its price."
