In 1869, brothers Ernest and Maurice Lasserre developed the Moko rum brand, importing rums from Jamaica and Martinique. For nearly a century, Moko Rum was a massive success in and around Bordeaux until production ceased. In 2017, Philippe Peyrat, along with his children Clemence and Edouard, revived the brand. As direct descendants of the Lasserre brothers and operators of the Cognac house Maison Peyrat, they decided to manufacture and age Moko rums in Panama. These spirits are imported at their original cask strength and undergo several months of additional aging in their own cellars, in barrels previously filled with their house Cognac. The Moko Panama 15-year-old rum, with an ABV of 42% and a volume of 700ml, delivers notes of cardamom, cinnamon, vanilla, tea, dry oak, roasted walnuts, and coconut. The expressive nose opens gently with intertwining aromas of tea, cardamom, and vanilla. After a few seconds of aeration, dried cola nut aromas are heightened with a spicy touch. The round and enchanting palate provides an extraordinary experience that will delight connoisseurs of rare products. This unsweetened bourbon-cask-driven Panama rum, tasted at the Whisky and Rum Festival 2022 in IJmuiden, is a decent drop with a bit more cask influence than spirit.

The Moko Panama 15-year-old rum is a testament to the intricate artistry of rum-making. With a well-rounded profile that balances sweet, spicy, and woody elements, this rum is both enchanting and complex. The additional aging in Cognac barrels adds a unique depth, making it a compelling choice for rum aficionados seeking something rare and extraordinary. Though it leans more toward cask influence, it remains a decent drop worth trying.
