Distilled in 1975 at the esteemed Demerara distillery, this rum is part of the exclusive Green Label Series. There are four unique releases from the 1975 batch, with varying ABVs of 40%, 40.3%, 40.5%, and 40.6%. The particular bottle I had the pleasure of sampling features an ABV of 40% and was bottled in 2012, meaning it spent nearly 37 years maturing in cask. Unfortunately, the exact duration spent aging in the tropics versus Scotland remains unknown. This rum was crafted using the historic double wooden pot still known as Port Mourant. Despite its modest ABV, I was pleasantly surprised by its pronounced aroma and full, dense flavor. The nose reveals woody notes intertwined with the sweet aromas of raisin and dark chocolate. On the palate, rich flavors of coffee, chocolate, barrel char, raisin, and licorice dominate. The finish is complex and prolonged, with lingering notes of barrel char and dark chocolate alongside sweet raisin tones. In my opinion, this rum rates 8.6 out of 10, though a higher ABV might have elevated it even further.
