Old Monk Rum is an exceptional dark Indian rum produced according to the traditional method. The brand was launched in 1954, but its origins can be traced back to 1855 when the building that is now the distillery was purchased for the purpose of brewing beer. However, the property subsequently changed hands, giving rise to a distillery called Mohan Meakin.
This blend of rums is aged in oak casks for a minimum of 7 years. The rum is characterised by a subtle vanilla flavour with hints of chocolate and caramel. It is one of the most popular rums in the world, the company prides itself on direct customer contact, regionality as well as environmental friendliness. It is produced in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh and has been a regular on the Monde Selections list since 1982.
The name of this rum (The Legend) mixes several symbols. The unmistakable head-shaped bottle is said to be inspired by the head of Mohan Meakin founder H.G. Meakin - the legend who brought this rum to market. However, the dark-coloured rum in the bottle can also be considered a legend; it is one of the distillery's most distinctive rums. It is aged in oak barrels for at least 7 years. In addition to the typical vanilla, the taste of cinnamon, caramel with fruity notes of banana, and orange peel develops on your tongue. The aroma of dried fruit and a touch of typical Orange Pekoe tea will leave an impression on any rum lover. The rum can be sipped both in a cocktail and on its own; the reminiscence of the green fields of India gives it a surprising lightness.
In addition to the high quality, the distillery also prides itself on being environmentally friendly - a sign of that is this blend, which is an entirely organic product. You will not find any chemical additives here, only a subtle vanilla-caramel taste with a hint of raisins. In the bottle, named Old Monk Very Old Vatted, you will find a 7-year-old rum in the colour of chocolate, which will surprise you with its simplicity and smoothness.
