Benjamin and Eduardo Camp departed Spain in 1872 to construct a rum refinery in Santiago de Cuba, where they established Matusalem & Company. In order to make Spanish cognac and sherry, the Camp brothers employed the solera technique of mixing and fermentation.

In the 1950s, the brand competed with Bacardi and Havana Club for Cuba's premium rum market share and successfully acquired 50% of the market share. Privately-owned Matusalem moved into exile after the Cuban revolution of 1959 and established itself in the US. Rum was still being made at the Cuban government's old Matusalem distillery in Santiago de Cuba.

Relaunched in 2002, Matusalem & Company emphasized its Cuban heritage and aimed for the premium market in the US. The rum is bottled in the Dominican Republic; however, it was not publicly accessible until 2015.

The title "Matusalem" is derived from the Spanish word for Methuselah, an Old Testament patriarch who lived for almost 969 years. It was selected as to tribute the aging mechanism employed in the label's production. The term "más viejo que Matusalén" (much older than Methuselah) promoted it and made it famous.

It's Matusalem & Co.'s mission to produce high-quality Caribbean rum. Originally founded in Santiago de Cuba, it is currently made inside the Dominican Republic.

It gives the appearance of corundum and reddish amber. Perpetual woody tones provide a rich and robust perfume to the nuanced and delicate nose. A rich, lasting progression with oak overtones is provided by the charred dry fruits and creme flavors that continue to be present on the tongue. Solera-style aging gives this rum its distinct flavor and aroma. A dark chocolate bar's caramel and rich chocolate scent may be clearly detected. Matusalem Gran Reserva is smokey and oaky with a tinge of sweetness. Using a proprietary technique, a combination of handmade, triple-distilled liquor is combined, filtered, and processed to produce a rum with an incredibly clean flavor, gentle balance, and subtle flavor profile.

Once you've taken a drink, you'll notice milky chocolate and delicate citrus hints. The richness of cognac comes to mind whenever you take a sip. The finish is smooth, with a medium sheen and an apricot aftertaste with a slight smokiness.
